Russia has very strong education system. Literacy rate of Russia is 99.7%. There are 5 types of higher education institutions: Universitet (University), Academia (Academy), Institut (Institute), Technicheskiy Universitet (Technical University), and Konservatoria (Conservatory). Russian higher education is not divided into Bachelors and Masters; instead it is a single stage of 5 to 6 years. Since 2007, under the Bologna Transformation, Russia is incorporating a two tier tertiary education with 4 years bachelor (Bakalavr’sdegree) and 2 years masters (Magistr’s degree). Medical schools in Russia offer a specialist 6-year curriculum leading to award Doctor of Medicine (MD) “Physician”. International students have the option to choose the Russian Medium or English Medium, for Russian medium one has to take a foundation year. Fully English medium MBBS in Russia is of higher fees than the Russian medium or combined medium. All the universities follow the same term time. They start in September; 1st term ends in January; 2nd term is from February to June.RECOGNITION :
In 2014, Russia was the 6th most popular country for study abroad which includes Medicine, Engineering, Maritime and Science. MCI approved list of medical universities includes top ranked Russian MBBS colleges. Actually the highest number of medical universities of Russia is listed by MCI among all other countries. Russian medical degree is valid in Europe too and they are considered as First degree in medicine. USA recognizes Russian medicine degree MD-Physician as MD and then one has to clear the USMLEs (all three steps) and complete the Residency programme in order to practice as doctor in USA; to teach or to research one has to complete the PhD in Medicine Science, in which they are not allowed to practice as doctor. For other field of studies a Russian Bakalavr’s and Specialist programme is given the equivalency of Bachelors, though in Russia a specialist is equivalent with Magistr’s. A Russian Magistr’s is equivalent with Masters Degree in other countries.
COST OF STUDY :
Cost of studying medicine in Russia varies on the medium of instruction. A student who opts for fully English taught MBBS study in Russia pays higher than the Russian language ones or combination of Russian or English language ones. The universities in Russia offers same programme in both languages with varying fees. So students need to be specific on language of instruction while enquiring about the fees. Though direct MBBS admission to the first year with no donation and no capitation fee is possible but student who would like to join low cost MBBS in Russian language will have to take a foundation year with additional fees. That reduces the total fees to nearly 50%. ELIGIBILITY :
Eligibility for MBBS in Russia is a student should be more than 17 years old at the time of admission, has passed 12th science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology with 50% and above. IELTS, TOEFL etc are not required for admission to Russian medical universities.
