NZ has three kinds of institutes; Public Universities, Public Polytechnics (ITPs) and Private Education Providers (PTEs). The quality control of all is done by NZQA (NZ Quality Authority).


Diplomas of Level 5 and Level 6 – Shorter duration to 2 years. Vocational skill oriented study which entitles a student to learn job oriented trade skills like Beauty and Spa, Culinary Arts, Patisserie and Cookery, Viticulture, Dairy Technology etc.

Undergraduate Study – three years. Most courses have a final written examination held either at mid-year (June) or the end of the academic year (October/November). The additional honors year may be studied to achieve in-depth knowledge on a subject that has been covered in bachelor degree. Engineering degrees are of four years.


Postgraduate Diploma :

one-year full-time study, designed for graduates, which builds on the subject matter in the academic field of the previous degree.

Graduate Diploma :

one-year, full-time course of study for graduates. It does not always require its students to have prior learning or experience in the subject matter of the diploma.

Master’s Degree :

Usually of one or two year’s full-time study. Requires relevant Bachelor’s degree. Many master’s degrees include a thesis component, and in some cases, particularly those which are taken after a four-year Bachelors (Honors) course, the degrees may be thesis-only.

Doctorate :

Doctorate programmes generally take 3 to 5 years of full time guided supervision. It is a fully research based degree. Usually provisional registration of 1 or 2 years is done followed by full research proposal approval. PHD students pay domestic tuition fee. The scholarship funding available and it covers international tuition fee, a monthly living allowance, travel, health, insurance, books and thesis allowance.

Intakes :

February, July and sometimes in September. The academic year is from mid / late February to early November and most Universities have 2 semesters with a holiday of 4 weeks in June.

English Language Requirements :

IELTS band of 6.0/6.5 for undergraduate & 6.5 / 7.5 for postgraduate courses is desirable. Waiver of IELTS possible on case to case basis.
